Charlie Sheen's Guide To Number One Social Networking Site

social media social mediaDuring our first article, we talked about the importance of participating in the social networks. We also talked about how you must have social accounts if you are to succeed at all at Internet marketing. These two points took us to the reality of having to managing the arduous tasks of participating in these social site communities every day. We boiled this management down to three basic functions which are sharing, growing, and responding. We then recommended sharing a unique post and someone else's post every single day. This should be done by interacting once during the mid-morning and once in the late afternoon or evening. Now let's talk about the next basic function which is growing. Never forget that you have to be persistent with your social accounts. You will not see results overnight. We say this now because it takes quite a while to build a big following and a big community on these accounts.

social marketing newsIf you stick with it, you will be rewarded handsomely. You will reach a point where you can recommend a link and then get thousands of clicks to that link within minutes. This is true influence. In order to grow your following, you need to start following others every single day. As you do this, they will reciprocate and follow you in return. Get in the habit of doing this every day. Do not go hog wild and follow hundreds and hundreds every time you sign on as this will get your account suspended. Follow a few people here and there. You can also join groups and communities in your niche which will induce other like-minded people to follow you as well. Incidentally, remember in the first article we mentioned how it may be more difficult to share using YouTube due to a lack of videos? This is not the cause in growing your following on YouTube. The third function we mentioned was responding. This means that you spend time responding to posts and comments that others have shared with you. It means that you become friends with and follow people who asked you first. This means that you go out and find posts, tweets, and videos you like and then comment about them. These types of activities may well be the most important of all in regards to building a big following and community. In a nutshell, I recommend that you sign on to your social accounts once in the mid-morning and perform these three functions and then repeat the process again in the late afternoon or evening. I created a grid on my spreadsheet to keep track of all this. You will find that you can complete all this less than an hour easily after you get it going.

Placeblogger is a simple directory for local blogs.

To find the local sections of Yahoo Answers, look for the “Local Businesses” category on the home page, and then drill down until you find the right city for you. The drawback here is that only major cities are covered with specific categories. You’ve probably heard about the benefits of reaching out and starting relationships with bloggers. I’ll mention that can help you find local bloggers. You’ll want to visit the local blogs you find, start reading them regularly, leaving quality comments, and eventually introduce yourself and start that relationship. Placeblogger is a simple directory for local blogs. LinkedIn is a great social site for business professionals; it’s not a place to sell products, but you may be able to connect with people looking for your area of expertise. The advanced search page lets you look for other members in your area. The ability to drill down to find people in your area and industry can help you find new business partners, employees, and other opportunities you may not know of yet. Many small/local business owners think social media is a waste of time. For some, it would be a waste of time to jump into social media without looking for the local angle. But the sites above are at the intersection of social media and local search. They offer opportunities that almost any small/local business should be interested in: the opportunity to find and connect with potential customers in their hometown. No matter which social media site fits best, it’s important to get involved not with an eye toward using it for sales pitches and spam; no one likes that. The idea is to connect with local people, not to alienate them. Focus not on what you can get from the community you join, but on what you can give. That’s the best recipe for local-social success.

Find out four great tips to put social media to work for your business. Social media pages form one of the foundations of inbound marketing -- they're where you can post your valuable content, using a call-to-action to drive visitors to your landing page, Social Media Important where they may become qualified leads. The challenge, of course, is making your social media pages stand out in the crowd. You can find plenty of social media tips to boost your visibility on the web, but these four give you a range of options that suit your goals and resources. Make it easy -- then, fun. No visitor should have to search around to find your social media pages. Use naming standards for your home pages that make it immediately clear who you are. Then, have some fun.

Categorize your Twitter content -- blogs, tweets and videos -- with hashtags that engage, inform and contain relevant keywords – like these examples, which actually won "best hashtag" awards! That doesn't mean you should shun Facebook, of course -- it's often the first choice for social searches. But you can also consider outlets that may provide a better fit for your services via a smaller, but more influential, audience. For example, LinkedIn is the world's largest business network for a reason -- it's highly credible, deep platform for making connections. If you are targeting B2B (business to business), some relevant connections from LinkedIn could put you in touch with influential people who may not otherwise pay attention to Facebook pages. Find advocates. Most advocates of social media tips would agree: few marketing tactics enhance credibility like kudos from impartial third-party source. Satisfied customers, industry awards and good reviews boost your profile and are easy to link from Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn or other social sites. You can go the extra mile by finding brand advocate -- people who promote your products or services, but who are not on your payroll. Your best customer, for example, can star in a blog interview or host a how-to on YouTube. Such tactics would not only boost your credibility, they practically guarantee that the customer will be sharing the content on his networks. Be a mensch. Not every message on your social site needs to be tied to sales. A company that reaches out to its community or the world at large is often seen as credible and trustworthy. Use your media to publicize worthy causes; then put your money where your tweets are by donating products, services or money and encouraging others to do the same. Want to get more personal? Yesterday's marketing tactics have been largely eclipsed by inbound marketing, which reflects the way consumers behave today. Getting the most from social media will help you make your mark in this wide-open environment.

The most prominent threats fall into two categories: technical and social. From a technical perspective, these social networking sites are, in reality, Web sites that allow hundreds of thousands of people to post content: on-line profiles, videos, and/or commentary. With all of that information coming in, malicious users are constantly trying to post malware, specifically browser exploits, to these sites. Attackers hope that if they are able to successfully load content containing a browser exploit, they can then take control of browsers by convincing other users to view their content. Beyond browser exploits, an attacker can post a script on a social networking site that will run inside the browsers of those who view the content. This variation of a cross-site scripting attack is what the so-called Samy worm did in MySpace in October 2005. The author of this worm updated his profile with a script. Whenever any other user read his profile, this script would run in that user's browser, adding the Samy author as a friend in MySpace.

social media defThe script would then add a copy of itself to this user's profile. When other users read any of the script-infected profiles, they too would be added as a friend to the Samy author and have their profile updated. Within an hour, the Samy author had hundreds of thousands of friends in MySpace. Because of this major risk, most social networking sites carefully filter out scripts and browser exploits posted within user content. Their filters are not perfect though, and sometimes a unique encoding scheme or obscure scripting trick makes it through, resulting in an attack like the Samy worm. Therefore, you should defend yourself by running an up-to-date browser and an antivirus/antispyware suite. Also, if you are particularly paranoid, you may want to disable scripts in your browser when accessing social networking sites. You could consider adding social networking sites to a different security zone in your browser, like Restricted Sites, where you could then disallow browser scripts. So what is community detection? Every network can be subdivided into sub-units which are groups of closely connected nodes (or individuals). In animal populations, communities can be groups of animals, couples or even solitary individuals. As usual, the categorization is dependent on the definition of a connection in the network. In the past researchers were using their own intuition or very basic calculations in order to decide which individual belongs to each group. While in some species its simple and clear to make this decision, in others, like the hyrax, it's not trivial. Some hyraxes are clearly part of a group, while others are occasionally seen out of the group, or even with another group. In these cases, it's not easy to decide to what group they belong. This decision has many consequences, as any analysis at the group level, or comparison of individuals from different groups, will depend on the definition of group members.

The Social Network

Community detection algorithms try to solve this problem by taking into account the connections (edges) each node has with all other nodes. There are many algorithms out there, reviewed by Fortunato. I'm not going to exhaustively review them - I would like to mention 3 algorithms I found to do an accurate job, that are relatively easy to use. One thing that is important to the mathematicians who invent most of these algorithms is their complexity, or the time it will take to run. For animal researches this is usually not a real problem, as the numbers of individuals/relations are small. Therefore, I don't care if an algorithm is heavy on resources. The second algorithm is called CPM, or clique percolation method (published in Nature in 2005). This algorithm works in a different way, trying to connect more and more cliques of closely related nodes. In contrast to the Girvan-Newman algorithm, this one allows for community overlap, so that one node can be part of more than one community.

It works by starting with cliques of a given size k, and then adding to them the members of other cliques that share k-1 nodes, until no more cliques can be added. One disadvantage is that you have to define k, or test which k gives the best results, which brings us back to the question of what is the best result. Another drawback is its inability to find communities of size 2, as cliques contain 3 or more members. There are versions of this algorithm that work on directed or weighted networks. A software named CFinder implements this algorithm. The last algorithm for today is called Link Communities and was published in Nature in 2010. This one also allows for community overlap. All of these algorithms performed well on my hyrax data, usually accurately identifying the "right" members of each group. I am sure that the last word was not said yet, and new algorithms are about to be developed. It will be interesting to see if and when this field gets saturated, and what algorithms will "win" and become standard.
