I've recently been hearing a lot about Pheed and how teens are flocking away from platforms like Facebook and Instagram and to newer more creative and versatile platforms like this. It's always worth checking out what those clever teens find interesting so I thought I would give Pheed a try. Here's a quick tutorial showing you round the basic features. Well I'm not really sure yet about Pheed. I did try uploading a video clip and I'm still waiting for it to appear, but there are some things I like about it. I like that it has the choice between video, image and audio. I also like the extended writing space of 420 characters. I do like the business model - Users who monetize their Pheed share the revenue with them - as it isn't dependent on advertising. What I'm not so sure about is its ability to unseat rivals like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. You can upload images, but it has none of Instagram's filters to make them actually look nice. Okay, the teens like it at the moment, but how long can you sustain a business based on that? Social Network (This one is about the movie!)/ What Larry thinks about the Winklevoss twins! What did Larry Summers really think of the Winklevoss twins? Harvard said in an interview at Fortune's Brainstorm Tech conference. Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss were at Harvard at the same time that Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook, and they had come to Summers for help in their fight for a piece of the action. Summers didn't try to dispel the portrayal. The Winklevoss twins have taken dozens of runs at Facebook in court since 2004. The brothers and a third Harvard classmate, Divya Narendra, have alleged that Zuckerberg had stolen the idea for Facebook from them. Facebook promptly countersued the trio and their own social networking site, ConnectU, alleging that they had hacked into Facebook to steal data and spam users. 65 million, part in cash and part in Facebook stock. But the trio later tried to pull out of the deal, alleging that Facebook had misrepresented the value of its stock. A judge ruled against them and forced the settlement to go through, but the Winklevosses and Narendra took the case to an appeals court. In April, Judge Alex Kozinski, chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco, attempted to put the kibosh on the case. Kozinski wrote in his decision. In June, the twins abandoned their plans to appeal to the Supreme Court for an unwinding of their 2008 settlement, and followed up a day later with a new motion in Boston federal court.
A lot of people are on social media. When you ride the LRT, MRT, bus or UV Express van, people always seem to be on their phones checking Facebook or Instagram. People used to read newspapers while commuting to work, but now reading the news means browsing news websites on a smartphone. As we all know everything has both a good and bad side. In case you hadn’t heard, Facebook users share not only a social network of over 200 million, but also significantly lower grade point averages (GPAs) than their non-member classmates (according to Time Magazine). And apparently Jennifer Aniston ended her relationship with John Mayer because he was addicted to Twitter (as apposed to drugs like other musicians… ). This begs the question, how many of us are addicted to social networks, and what can we do about it? You may think, “I’m not addicted, I can quit anytime! ” Well if you have more Facebook friends than real friends, something must be done. If you spend more time on Twitter than in sunlight, it’s time for change. If you spend more time working on your LinkedIn profile than doing actual work, it’s time for an intervention. Regardless of your excuse, this is not ok. Obviously the first step in your rehabilitation is to admit there is a problem. How could you not pick up groceries on your way home from work, yet somehow you twitted 3 times before making it home?

You have a problem, and until you realize it, there is nothing we can do for you. You need to realize that these systems are in place for you to use, not to use you. They are tools, not lifestyles. If you are using the tool for anything other than it’s intended use, chances are you are wasting time. Track Your Time Online - The simplest way to ensure you aren’t wasting time in any one place is to monitor your time. Use a stopwatch and set a limit. When time is up, log out, regardless of what’s left. There is always tomorrow.
Remember the Telephone - I know, it’s so primitive. But a call to a friend works just as well as a Facebook message, and it is real human interaction, something we are losing touch with. Go Outside - get away from your portal to the network. Get some sunshine, chances are you need it. Limit Your Memberships - There is no need for memberships to 15 different networks. In fact, there is no need for even 2 memberships of sites which do the same thing. Choose Facebook or Myspace, but not both. Digg, or StumbleUpon. This will probably cut your memberships in half, and hopefully cut the time spent on them down also. Use Your Networks Productively - When I first used twitter I followed anyone, and had thousands of followers. Strangely though, people rarely responded to my twits, and it was like I was invisible. I decided I’d only use twitter if I could be productive with it, so I unfollowed thousands of users (now below 200), and use Twitter only to share and interact with people with similar interests as mine.

Now my Twitter is a tool, not a time warp. Prioritize - Use these tools only when your work has been done, or during down time. Don’t spend time updating your profile or changing your pic when there is work to be done. This will not only save you time and increase productivity, but will build self discipline as well. Stop Procrastinating - Many times we get on Facebook or twitter when we have real work that we just don’t want to do. Get the work done. Once you finish you’ll have all the time in the world to spend making friends on Facebook. Remove the Cellphone Apps - You don’t really need Facebook or Twitter on your phone. Nothing on there can be that important. Save your social networking for when you are behind the desk and limit the distractions throughout the day. Spend More Time With Close Friends and Family - You aren’t the only one who suffers when you spend countless hours on MySpace. Your family and friends don’t see you, because you are too busy learning how to customize your backgrounds and take crazy pictures from all different angles for your profile pic. Cut out the cancer and get back to friends and family. It’s time to take back your free time. Remember that these sites are built to make money, not increase your productivity. We’ve mentioned the importance of interacting with your followers in previous blog posts. We’ll say it again: there has to be more to your social media strategy than simply posting content. Unfortunately, many brands don’t realize they can’t just promote their products on social media and expect to attract their target audience. You can have thousands of followers, but if you have nothing entertaining or engaging, social media isn’t going to be a valuable marketing tool at all. You need to include sharing non-promotional content and interacting with your followers on your social media to-do list each and every week. How Much Self-Promotion is Too Much? I like to use the 20/80 rule, a widely-accepted ratio for sales posts vs. For example, if you own a day spa, 20% of your posts could be related to promoting your therapeutic services, products for sale and so on. The other 80% of your posts should be content that your target audience will find interesting. You could post links to articles, blogs and videos on everything from healthy recipes to self-care tips. Make sure that if you share humorous photos, videos or articles that they’re appropriate for your audience and your industry.
All of your content can be valuable and increase your social media presence if you speak authentically to your followers. You’re not just entertaining them - you’re increasing the odds that they’ll like or comment on your post and share it with their followers. Whenever possible, get topical with your content. Building trust with your followers makes them more likely to purchase your products or services and to be loyal to your brand.
