All Social Websites

Are you confused and overwhelmed by social media? In this post, I’m going to lay out a few of the best social media sites for small business owners, and why. First off, when considering your online marketing strategy, your website MUST come first. Think of it as sort of a “base camp” that you will connect to/from any number of external points. Your website is property owned by you, whereas social media pages are the property of someone else. Look at social media sites as merely a vehicle to get your message out there and drive traffic back to what you have control over. Still, getting “social” is an important component of any marketing plan. Did you know… there are more than 100 thriving social media sites online right now and more popping up every single day. It’s enough to make a person’s head spin! Where do you start when deciding what sites to include in your marketing strategy?

trending news on social mediaHere is my list. You don’t have to have a presence on every channel. Decide which ones (2 or more) will most benefit your business and go from there. Of course, if you—or your business/agency—end up needing to manage multiple social media profiles from the list below, which is often the case for a growing company in 2018, I would certainly suggest you check out Social Report. Launched in February 2004 for college students, Facebook has come a long way in a short seven years. Now with an estimated 800 million active users, it is ranked as the most used social networking service in the world (by the number of active monthly users). Lucky for you, starting a business page - and tapping into the power of Facebook - is pretty easy. Created in 2010 as a photo sharing site, Instagram is the new darling of social media channels. In part due to its easy-going nature (photos are fun!) and in part because it was purchased by Facebook in 2012 and has been continually invested in ever since.

The Most Used Social Networks

Instagram is amazing for all sorts of businesses but does particularly well with visually driven organizations such as fashion, food, and travel. Posts on Instagram tend to get better engagement than on other platforms, and the Live Story feature is a really fun way to show transparency … which is what consumers expect these days! A micro-blogging social media site that has been around since 2004, Twitter has an estimated 300 million users world-wide. It has been described as SMS of the internet because posts are short, sweet and to-the-point. Twitter is a tidal wave of information. Twitter differs from Facebook in that users ‘follow’ each other. If someone follows you, you can follow them back. Therefore it is easier to gain a following, but the followers are not as targeted as they are on Facebook. I have found that Twitter is an awesome way to connect with people and/or other businesses participating in the same event. Following a hashtag at a concert, live performance or webinar creates a richer experience.

As a business owner, you can utilize this at events your company participates in - try it! I’ll bet you’d be blown away by the response. YouTube recently announced YouTube for schools and I predict more ‘stations’ will be rolling out in the future. Will your specialty be included? Founded in 2002 and launched in 2003, LinkedIn is THE premier B2B social networking site. LI gets two new members every second, putting it at 135 million active users in more than 200 countries. From job listings to interest groups (there are more than 870K groups) there are great benefits to keeping your profile up-to- date.

The mission is to connect everyone in the world through shared taste and the things they find interesting. Users find and create theme-based boards, populating these ‘boards’ with a “Pin It” button. Pins may be divided into pictures, videos, discussions, and gifts. Users may follow anyone or any brand; users can also ‘re-pin’ your pinned items. Millions of children are using social networking websites intended for older users, according to a study by the media regulator, Ofcom. Research into internet use has found that, among children with internet access, more than a quarter of eight to 11-year-olds claimed to have a profile page on a social networking website. This is despite nominal age restrictions aimed at preventing pre-teens from using such sites. Although there are some networking sites aimed at children, most of those frequented by under-11s are targeted at teenagers and adult internet users. Since this could mean a significant number of Britain's 11.5 million children may be seeing inappropriate material, Ofcom said the findings caused concern. Robin Blake, the head of media literacy at Ofcom. The study, commissioned by the regulator's media literacy unit, surveyed more than 7,000 adults and children around the UK. It outlined a disparity between the perception of social networking among adults and children.

While 65% of parents said they set rules for the way their children used social networking sites, only half of children said their families had laid down restrictions. A further 43% said their parents placed no limits on what they could use sites for. The findings echo the results of the Byron review into the effects of the internet and video games on children, which was published last week. The government immediately promised to implement all of the recommendations of the review - which was headed by TV psychologist Tanya Byron - including the formation of a UK council of child internet safety. Elsewhere, the Ofcom study revealed a picture of Britain as a nation of consumate social network surfers. Almost half (49%) of all under-18s online said they were using social networks regularly, equivalent to some 3.8 million children around the country. The use of the internet by children is something of a hot political topic at the moment. As well as the Byron review, the home secretary is due to unveil a series of reforms later this week that are aimed at increasing safety for children online. These are believed to include a voluntary code of good conduct for websites.

Social media marketing is no piece of cake. It is a serious proposition because it involves the development of the brand persona. Not anyone, who knows the Internet, can really handle it. This is perhaps the reason why small and medium businesses are liberally spending on social media marketing services in Australia. Social media marketing should ideally be backed by plans as seriously crafted for any other business area. What are the Most Common Myths about Social Media Marketing? There still are businesses that actually believe that anyone who is aware of the existence of YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram can "handle" their social media presence. In reality, as mentioned above, social media marketing is all about building the brand persona that can definitely not be created in a day. It requires carefully crafted plans to earn the loyalty of netizens. Businesses ideally should rope in social media specialists for the job instead of just anyone who’s on all social media channels.

Documented below are a few myths about social media marketing that every business out there should be aware of and steer clear of at the same time. Social media is definitely a serious proposition - a rewarding promotional vehicle if used properly. However, it should be noted that not all platforms are equally valuable for all businesses out there. Entrepreneurs really need not panic if their marketing team is focusing on four to five channels ignoring the rest. Apps should be chosen as per the demographics, usability and compatibility with other business strategies. Three or four social media channels should ideally keep businesses sorted. This belief, of course, stems from another belief that a social media profile can be managed by anyone who is aware of the basics of platforms like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. The reality is - businesses can always end up creating profiles on popular platforms like Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter for free. However, marketing itself should entail some monetary value required for the time spent here and for the implementation of an online social media strategy.
