Social Media Does Not Harm Teenagers, Oxford Study Says

Widespread fears over the harmful effects on teenagers of spending hours on social media could be misplaced, according to a major British study. It claims online activity only has a ‘trivial’ effect on their happiness, flying in the face of research and the prevailing opinion of many parents. The survey of 12,000 teenagers in this country suggests that less than 1 per cent of adolescent unhappiness can be blamed on the use of sites such as Facebook. He added society should ‘retire the notion’ of focusing on the amount of time which young users spend online. Widespread fears over the harmful effects on teenagers of spending hours on social media could be misplaced, according to a major British study. Instead, research should examine if particular aspects of online behaviour have negative impacts on mental health, such as looking at potentially harmful pages or posts. The study said leading social media companies have data which could shed light on the problem but were reluctant to share it with scientists. The researchers added: ‘We show that social media effects are not a one-way street. The study followed teen social media use from 2009 to 2016 as part of a long-term survey of UK households. It concluded that lower life satisfaction led to an increase in activity while social media use led to lower life satisfaction but the trends were only ‘modest’. She added statistical analysis concluded that ‘99.75 per cent of a young person’s life satisfaction for a given year has nothing to do with how they use social media’. This indicated that such websites account for ‘less than 1 per cent’ of a teenager’s life satisfaction. Good job it was a Bank Holiday! Becoming a parent is one of the greatest joys of life!

Market leader Facebook was the first social network to surpass 1 billion registered accounts and currently sits at 2.32 billion monthly active users. Sixth-ranked photo-sharing app Instagram had 1 billion monthly active accounts. The leading social networks are usually available in multiple languages and enable users to connect with friends or people across geographical, political or economic borders. Other social networks like Tumblr or Twitter are all about rapid communication and are aptly termed microblogs. The blurring between offline and virtual life as well as the concept of digital identity and online social interactions are some of the aspects that have emerged in recent discussions.

Why big brands like investing so much money in their brand marks? This is a question every single person wants to know. I guess, only those people ask this particular question who doesn’t know the power and influence of company logo designs on a business and market of course! These big brands are very much conscious about their image and reputation in the market which is why; they believe in doing everything that is best. What do you think; would they ever go for a bad repute graphic design company? No, instead there will be a huge searching campaign launch to hunt for a hirable graphic design company so much so that they will in the end. The best in town! I can bet, the final selected company would come with a great deal of price and packages, and these firms go for it without wasting a single minute. A fool and his money is parted easily, that’s what people perceive about these big brands who are eager to get it by any means. Are they really that fool? In fact they believe they are not buying corporate logo designs but a face with which they’d be recognized on the world’s stage. This recognition will render them with identity, brand and unique place in the market. It will come with more gains like you will never have to tell people what you are all about? What do you deal in? What are your services? And most of all what is your company’s USP (Unique Selling Proposition). So you cannot insult it by calling it a mere colorful pictorial graphical representation!

This is a subject I have been studying on my own over the last year, and found the chapter on it very interesting. I especially like the Learned Helplessness/Battered Woman Theory section of the book. Over the last year, I have counseled several battered women and almost everyone said that, after a while, they began to believe what their abusers said to them was true. It is rare that physical abuse is absent of verbal abuse. Learned helplessness is, at its basic principle, an adoption of false beliefs about reality. The abused initially thinks about escape and rejects the accusations against her yet gradually begins to believe the words spoken to her and then begins adapting her behavior to accept the abuse. In some cases, she actually believes that she deserves the abuse because, in her mind, York Times' hypocritical rant social media it is all her fault. The response is much like the famous experiment by Martin Seligman and Steven Maier. They had initially observed helpless behavior in dogs that were classically conditioned to expect an electrical shock after hearing a tone. Later, the dogs were placed in a shuttle box that contained two chambers separated by a low barrier. The floor being electrified on one side, and not on the other. There is more detail to the experiment than what I'm sharing, but eventually a set of dogs who had not been classically conditioned simply jumped over the low barrier to escape the shock. However, the dogs that were conditioned did not even attempt to escape because they were conditioned to "believe" that there was no escape and therefore just endured the shock. This is related to a belief that their locus of control is outside of themselves. I dare not compare humans to dogs but the effect of environmental conditioning is undeniable.

social marketing examplesHave a Facebook page? Chances are if you are lost already then you haven't heard of these social networking sites and probably don't plan on it either. For those of you who have answered yes to one or all of these questions then you are social networking regulars and know the ropes already. With the ever increasing availability of social networking tools in the palm of your hand, face to face human interaction is quickly becoming a thing of the past. The media plays a major role in promoting the death of in person human interaction as well. There are commercials for phone plans that include unlimited text messaging, unlimited anytime minutes, and access to many of the social networking apps such as Twitter, Facebook and MySpace. In fact, one commercial specifically sets the scene of a couple sitting at a diner table each with their phone in their hands sending text messages to each other. There is an inherit danger involved with social networking as well.

list of popular social networking sitesOn May 20, 2010 Maryland State Governor Martin O'Malley signed into law a bill that prohibits the use of hand-held devices while driving. This is just the very early beginnings of the state's aggressive distracted driver legislation. The law, which went into effect in October of 2010, is currently only enforceable as a secondary offense meaning that a driver must be breaking another traffic law before being cited for the use of a hand-held device. As time passes we are sure to see many more states adopt this type of law and most likely enforce it as a primary offense. Texting while driving is not the only thing that drivers are distracted by. There are apps out there today for your phone that allow you to update your Facebook status, compose a tweet and even go so far as to video conference. These are some of the more obvious dangers of social networking. A more serious issue with social networking today is the ease of access to your personal information as well as the alarming amount of private details people share about their day.

Top Five Social Networking Sites For 2016

make a social networkChildren participate in social networking as well and at very young ages, which in turn allows sexual predators unprecedented access to photos of children as well as details of their whereabouts and their schedule. Aside from sexual predators, these sites also provide a playground for hackers and those that are out to steal your personal information in order to get gain from the user. Take for example Twitter which has an option to send a user a direct message (DM) that is not intended for the rest of the twitter population. In these direct messages you would send someone your phone number or email address. These DMs can be intercepted by a hacker and used to gather information on the user that can lead to further exposure. Social networking can derail your career as well. There have been many cases where a user has said something about their boss or has divulged privileged, proprietary information on these sites that has in turn cost the employee their job and cost the company a lot of money.

Social networking can be a great tool to stay connected when you are on the go.

There is need to be concerned about your social networking activity especially if you are a heavy user. The truth is, the majority of activity on your social networking sites occurs during work hours and on company computers, BlackBerrys, and other resources. It is literally a nightmare for IT administrators to have to monitor the activity from these sites, therefore most companies prohibit, if not completely block access to these sites on their corporate networks. Be careful when using social networking sites at work, it could cost you your job, your company revenue, and much more. Social networking is one of the greatest inventions of this generation and is sure to be even more prominent with generations to come. There are inherent dangers and downsides with just about every type of technology, and while this can at times take away from the innovation, with some general security practices in place and good user education these threats can be minimized. There are sure to be more social networking innovations that change the way we communicate with each other as time passes, with that said, count on the threats to these innovations to be just as prominent. Social networking can be a great tool to stay connected when you are on the go. The options to contact someone no matter where you are seemingly endless. Use these sites wisely but don't forget how to shake someone's hand, introduce someone, carry on a face to face conversation or send the occasional letter, as these are still the most personal way to communicate. Take time to unplug for 15 minutes of each day and enjoy the life that is happening around you.

number 1 social mediaCross linking to the group website makes it more visible. Place a link to the Goodreads group on your library homepage and on your library blog. Change the background image of library computers or the screen-saver to something related to the group. Add an icon to the desktop (such as the one on the left) that acts as a hyperlink directly to the group homepage. Bookmarks are an easy way to create awareness of the group, however it is not convient for users to type in long links that they read on the bookmark. So instead of providing the link on the bookmark the library could say 'Check out our group on Goodreads! Find us on the library homepage' As long as the library has a Goodreads icon that is clear and links to the group on their website users will be able to find it. Email/newsletters is another way to promote the group. If you are an academic library it is a good idea to send someone around to talk to various departments on campus. For instance, the English department may be very interested that the group exists, and the library can ask professors to mention the group to students.

Yet professors of all ranks and disciplines are revealing such information on public, national platforms: blogs, Web pages, social networking sites, even campus television. The show, which has professors responding on camera to undergraduate gripes such as “boring beyond belief,” made its debut in October on mtvU, a 24-hour network broadcast to more than 7.5 million students on American college campuses. There was a time when professors did not outrank music premieres on television. They were buttoned-up authority figures, like the legendary fictional Professor Kingsfield, portrayed by John Houseman in “The Paper Chase.” The personal lives of professors could only be imagined from the sparse clues of clothing, handwriting and the contents of offices. These days, the clues are usually digital and are broad invitations to get to know the person behind the Ph.D. While many professors have rushed to meet the age of social networking, there are some who think it is symptomatic of an unfortunate trend, that a professor’s job today is not just to impart knowledge, but to be an entertainer.
