Boomer "Social Networking" Web Sites

Redwood Age -- Think. Plenty for Boomer Consumers to chose from, which means that not all of them will find success in the marketplace. The fundamental issue for all of these sites is relevance to Boomers or someone over 50. We don't think being a Boomer makes you a member of an affinity group -- it's just a demographic designation. A quick click-through to all the sites and you'll see some that obviously have been well-funded and designed, and others that are perhaps more home-made. The top three at first glance in our view: reZOOM, BOOMj and BoomerGirl. Clean layouts, yet visually interesting and inviting. You want to click somewhere. We're not fans of eons.com's Obits section. It's the only site among this bunch that features anything about death and dying, which could make the site interesting to some. We find most of the taglines amusing but not helpful or informative. Chuck Nyren has already taken many of them to task in this post from last year. The best name is "Growing Bolder." Says it all and is about an attitude, not an age or even a lifestage. Done right (and it's being revamped as we type this), it could be a real winner.

what is social about social mediaBut some services aren't necessarily better just because you add your social network. Beyond privacy concerns (for example, Google Health obviously isn't better if all my friends can see my health records), there are services where interacting with strangers is better than interacting with friends. A simple example: When I am in a new city looking for a sushi restaurant, I don't really care what my friends liked when they were there. I care what the sushi experts in that city like. While I love seeing what my friends think about businesses in San Francisco when I'm browsing Yelp, I wouldn't necessarily care (or trust) what they think about Boston if I were stuck in a blizzard looking for a quick dinner. Another example: Most of my friends aren't fashion experts. I don't really care what they recommend on a clothing site. I'd like fashion recommendations curated by people who are passionate about fashion whether I know them or not. While some of those people might be my friends, most of them won't be.

The social networking sites fall under the taxpaying sector but they are evading it in Nepal. As information and advertisements are boosted on these social networks, a huge amount of money is flowing out. Even the trade and advertisements done via international e-commerce sites have caused loss to Nepal’s revenue. Meanwhile, the government has already started the initiative to bring social media operation under the tax net. The draft of the Bill on Information and Technology Management has incorporated different restrictive provisions on the operation of social media sites in the country. Stating that it would help regulate social media operation in the country, the draft bill has introduced a provision whereby all social media sites should be registered at the Department of Information (DoI).

I have to wonder.

What do you know about social media? Before you answer that question, let me tell you that you know more than you may think. Social media is simply another way for us to communicate and connect with one another. If you are a smart communicator and understand the power of connections, you already know a lot about social media. Ashton Kutcher said “One person’s voice can be as powerful as an entire media network,” once he surpassed 1 million followers on Twitter, beating CNN. He described this achievement as the “democratization” of the media. I have to wonder. Wasn’t the media democratized before? What makes it now a “democracy” because one man can reach 1 million people? Perhaps democracy and democratization are the wrong words (even though it sounds catchy). What social media has done is unleash the power of communication and connection one person at a time. Communicating one-on-one always had a powerful effect on us because it enabled us to connect with one another.

Everything you read and hear about social media requires connection and building relationships. Remember when communication consisted of three choices? When given these three choices, we selected face-to-face interactions when we knew we had to make a special connection with someone. Telephone connections happened when we did not need as much intimacy or when distance prevented us from making face-to-face contact. We resorted to the letter as the least personal form of communication. Today, we have many more choices. Nonetheless, our decision-making process remains the same. How much connection, how much intimacy do we need in order to communicate our message? CNN does not care about intimacy; they care about getting the news broadcasted to many people at once. Amazingly, social media also broadcasts news in much the same way CNN does. But, because the source comes from a “friend”, a “follower”, or a “connection” we are more likely to believe it.

In the past we could eyeball the communicator during a face-to-face interaction to determine truth. Today, we must depend upon building relationships that create trust and that create believability. 1. Our young people are connected. Today’s youth understands social media; they live and breathe it every day. They use the tools as ways to share with their friends. As kids, we used the telephone. Today’s kids use cell phones and MySpace. When you put the cell phone with MySpace, you get Twitter. To any young person, the power of Twitter is a no brainer. 2. Social media brings on two-way communication. Where email was one-way communication that was often not instantaneous, Twitter is two-way and instant. Furthermore, with Twitter you can have instant two-way communication with virtually thousands of people at once. 3. Social media enables people to deepen connections and relationships. I could correspond with you quickly through email.
